Curriculum Intent
The Functional Skills English course is designed to provide students with practical English skills that can be applied in everyday life, employment, and further education. By offering engaging and accessible content, the course aims to build confidence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, ensuring that learners are well-prepared for real-life communication challenges.
The course uses fiction and non-fiction texts to develop an understanding and appreciation of the English language. Tailored to meet the needs of students at different levels, the Functional Skills English course is split into Level 1 and Level 2.
Content
There are three main content focuses throughout the course:

Reading: Students will be required to engage with a range of texts on a range of topics. These will be of varying lengths that instruct, describe, explain or persuade. In the first year of the course, students will read Wonder by R.J. Palacio.

Writing: Students will learn how to write narratives, instructions, explanations, reports, and articles.

Speaking and Listening: Students will learn how to communicate information, ideas, and opinions effectively and use appropriate language dependent on the topic and situation.
