SEN (Special Educational Needs)

At Red Balloon Norwich, our students come from diverse educational backgrounds and have often struggled with learning. Some feel they have ‘failed’ the education system, significantly impacting their mental health and well-being. Our mission is to empower students to learn, providing a safe classroom environment where they know they can achieve.

The team at Red Balloon Norwich works closely with our students, families, carers, and other professionals to ensure we offer support tailored to each young person’s specific needs.

What are EHCPs - Educational Health Care Plans?

</p >

This is a formal plan that outlines the specific support a child or young person needs to meet their educational, health and social care needs.

All of our students have an EHCP with needs in one or more of the following categories:

Communication & Interaction: Difficulties refer to a child or young person’s struggle with expressing themselves, understanding others, and engaging in social interactions. These difficulties can encompass various aspects of speech, language, and social communication.

Cognition & Learning: Difficulties refer to challenges a child or young person faces in understanding, processing, and using information, impacting their learning and ability to access the curriculum. These difficulties can be general, affecting overall learning, or specific, impacting particular areas like reading or math.

Social, Emotional & Mental Health: Are described as challenges a child or young person has in managing their emotions and behaviour. These difficulties can manifest in various ways, including issues with managing mood, behaviour, relationships, and engaging in learning.

Sensory & Physical: Difficulties refer to challenges a child or young person may experience due to sensory impairments (hearing or vision) or physical disabilities that affect their ability to learn, access education, or participate in daily activities.  These difficulties can range from mild to severe and may impact various areas of development, including communication, motor skills, and social interactions.

We work closely with parents, carers, teaching/pastoral staff, the local authority, external agencies and our young people with SEND to understand and provide individualised support to ensure they achieve their full potential. As part of that continued support the child or young person’s EHCP is reviewed annually, updating individual needs, progress towards EHCP Outcomes, Preparing for Adulthood, Independent career advice and Transition planning for Post 16 further education.

Our young people leave Red Balloon empowered, confident, valued, members of their community.

Tailored Support For Specific Needs

This include:

  • 1:1 intervention sessions (Focused on specific areas of need)
  • Access to laptops in every lesson
  • Referral to educational and Clinical psychology
  • Referral to Dyslexia Norfolk

EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) reviews are carried out annually, and this information is shared with the entire staff so interventions and strategies can be implemented to improve each child’s educational experience. Staff meet weekly to plan support interventions while working with a range of multi-agencies.

Our timetables are carefully crafted to meet the SEND needs of each student, providing a breadth of education that encompasses academic and practical elements. Students receive core subjects in the morning and a range of vocational sessions in the afternoon that they choose.

In order to suppor the SEN needs of our students, we provide a supportive transtion plan which allows students to access new opportunities and future post 16 placements to help prepare them for their next stage.
