At our school, the intent of teaching the English Literature is to cultivate thoughtful, independent readers who are equipped to explore, analyse, and appreciate literature from a broad range of cultures, genres, and time periods. We aim to develop learners who not only succeed academically, but also understand the power of literature to shape ideas, challenge perspectives, and deepen empathy.
Through a rich curriculum that includes poetry, modern prose, drama, and literary heritage texts, students will:

Develop the ability to read critically, infer meaning, and engage personally with literature.

Understand how writers use language, form, and structure to influence readers.

Explore how texts reflect and respond to historical, social, and cultural contexts.

Build skills of comparison, interpretation, and literary evaluation.

Learn to communicate their ideas in a clear, academic style with increasing precision and confidence.

Route A: Coursework Option

Component 1: Poetry and Modern Prose (Exam – 60%)

  • Exam Length: 2 hours
  • Weighting: 60% of the qualification

Component 2: Coursework (40%)

  • Weighting: 40% of the qualification
  • Content: Two written assignments: Modern drama or prose (e.g., An Inspector Calls)
  • Literary heritage text (e.g., Romeo and Juliet, Pride and Prejudice)
    • Assessment Focus: Detailed analysis, personal engagement, and essay structure.
    • Internally assessed and externally moderated.
