Curriculum Intent
In line with the English National Curriculum, KS3 studies of English are focused on developing students’ proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, while fostering a passion for language and learning.
The course is designed to equip students with a stronger vocabulary, an understanding of grammar, and the ability to adapt their writing for different contexts, purposes, and audiences. Writing clearly and coherently is emphasised, alongside developing discussion skills to elaborate on their ideas and engage in debates. This course is designed to prepare students for future academic and everyday applications through strengthening their core communication skills.

Further Information

Content

There are three main content focuses throughout the course:

Reading: Students will be required to engage with a range of fiction and non-fiction texts to understand how language has been effectively used for specific purposes and audiences. Through the course, students will be encouraged to read whole books, to read in depth, and to read for pleasure and information.

Writing: Students will learn how to control their writing through the use of Standard English. Students will be encouraged to apply their growing knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and text structure to their writing.

Speaking and Listening: Students will learn how to communicate information, ideas, and opinions effectively through participating in formal debates and structured discussions.

Assessment

There is no final qualification associated with this scheme. Instead, the learning in KS3 prepares students to move into entry level, functional skills, or GCSE classes. Internal assessments, including BKSB, will be conducted periodically in line with our assessment policy. This is to ensure that students are working towards their expected goals for the future and to cement learning of the national curriculum.
